Kimala Price (NC ’92)

Dr. Kimala Price is a leading scholar in reproductive politics with ongoing research on the intellectual and political history of the reproductive justice movement, Black women’s reproductive justice activism, and the “queering” of reproductive justice.

Price earned her Bachelor of Arts in political science from Newcomb College in 1992, and also holds a PhD in political science and graduate certificate in women’s studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Today, she is a Professor of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University (SDSU), where is she has also served as Co-Director of the Bread and Roses Center for Feminist Research and Activism since 2014. Prior to her position at SDSU, Price was a post-doctoral research fellow at Ibis Reproductive Health, an independent research center based in Cambridge, MA. She is the author of the book Reproductive Politics in the United States and has published several articles in academic journals such as Politics & Gender; Politics, Groups, and Identities; Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism; Women’s Health Issues; and Sexuality Research and Social Policy. Price has also written commentary for the Washington Post and The Conversation.

In addition to her research and scholarship, Price has held a strong commitment to feminist activism and policy advocacy. For more than two decades, she has been active in the reproductive rights and reproductive justice movements, including working for a number of national women’s rights organizations in Washington D.C. and Atlanta, GA. Price has also worked as a legislative fellow on the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. She currently serves on the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest and has been an active member of SisterSong Women of Color for Reproductive Justice Collective and founding advisory board member of Women, Action and the Media (WAM!).
