Lauren Gaines (SLA '20, *23) is a proud two-time Tulane graduate. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Gaines chose to attend Tulane because she wanted an environment that was academically and socially challenging.

"Tulane offered a chance to meet incredible human beings from around the world that were passionate about making a positive change in the world around them.”

“I wanted to be in that number, and it turned out to be one of the greatest decisions of my life (so far!)”, says Gaines.

She enjoyed many incredible opportunities and involvements at Tulane. She spent three years as the Resident Advisor for the Spark RLC in Josephine Louise, completed an internship with New Student and Leadership Programs, and was both student body vice president and Homecoming Royalty.

After graduation, her transition from student to young professional was facilitated by the guidance, advice, and encouragement of the network she built at Tulane.

Today, Gaines serves as the communications director for the ACLU of Louisiana.

“Every day I have the privilege of fighting to protect and advance the civil rights and liberties of the most marginalized communities in Louisiana, and I am truly humbled by this opportunity. It is the honor of a lifetime!”

She has also stayed connected with the Tulane community; first as a board member for the Tulane Club of New Orleans and now as a member of the Newcomb Alumnae Association Board of Directors.

Gaines’ student leadership experiences had an invaluable impact and Gaines’ transition to GOLD Krewe and GOLD Krewe Ambassador. “I learned early on at Tulane that you cannot lead folks without getting to know them and understanding their perspectives. Today as an alumna, I carry that lesson with me and prioritize organic, authentic relationship building.”

“My journey as a young alumna has shown me the importance of showing up. When you show up for others, personally and professionally, they will do so for you. In this life, we get what we give, and I am determined to approach all areas of my life with an open mind and an open heart!

Gaines is enthusiastic about new GOLD Krewe members. “For our new GOLD Krewe members, first, CONGRATULATIONS. You did the thing — celebrate yourself! Second, know that when you're ready and need a helping hand, there are a host of us that have gone through the same transition quite recently and are eager to connect with you and help you in any way we can. Welcome!”
